Maximizing Your Public Health Fellowship or Internship Experience

April 13, 2017 - 12:00pm - 1:00pm
51-279 CHS
650 Charles E. Young DR S, Los Angeles, CA 90095

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) recently reported from the 2016 Internship & Co-op Survey that intern to full time conversion rates are at a 13 year high, at 61.9 percent.  Pair this with NACE’s 2015 Job Outlook survey that found over 75% of employers hiring full time candidates are seeking those with relevant work experience, and this should be quite motivating to make sure your internship or fellowship goes well.

In this workshop, Kristy J. Sherrer, Director of Career Services for the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health will detail practical steps to help you prepare to make the most of your public health fellowship or internship, specifically focusing on:

  • Making a Memorable First Impression
  • Professional Etiquette for Emails and Meetings
  • Enhancing Your Online Professional Image
  • Professional Networking Strategies
  • Standing Out in Your Internship or Fellowship

This event is co-sponsored by the Public Health Student Association.

Fielding School of Public Health: Salary Negotiation Strategies and Practice Seminar

April 26, 2017 - 5:00pm - 7:00pm

A survey by Salary.com revealed that only 37% of people always negotiate their salaries—while an astonishing 18% never do. Furthermore, 44% of respondents report to have never brought up the topic of a salary increase during performance reviews.

The biggest reason for not negotiating? Fear.

In this interactive seminar, attendees will learn persuasive negotiation techniques as well as current salary trends and resources, to overcome this fear of negotiating while building confidence through role playing negotiation scenarios.

Attendees will leave with a strong understanding of:

- Typical salary ranges for a variety of public health practice areas

- Timeline for negotiation and what items can be included in the negotiation process

- Sample scripts for negotiation scenarios

- Areas of improvement in their own negotiating skills

Please be sure to review the FSPH Career Services CCLE page for Negotiation Fundamentals prior to this workshop.
